On the basis of a brief analysis of the read/write dynamic characteristics for magnetic disk drives, a kind of functional failure mode is presented for their operating under the circumsatnces of mechanical vibration. The response of magnetic disk drives upon excitations may cause the off-track errors between the head and the disk when the relative displacement is larger than the allowable value in the seek direction. The theoretical mehtod that predicates the possible failure is given which provides a general criterion for appraising the safety of computers servicing in serous vibration conditions.
