Viridicatin (4-phenyl-3-hydroxy-2-quinolone), viridicatol (4- m-hydroxyphenyl -3-hydroxy-2-quinolone) and 3-O-methylviridicatin together with their biogenetic precursors cyclopeptin, dehydrocyclopeptin, cyclopenin and cyclopenol have been isolated from different species of Penicillium. Viridicatin and viridicatol and 3-0-methylviridicatin have also been prepared synthetically. Viridicatin and viridicatol strongly chelate Fe~(3+) ions. 5 ppm Viridicatin completely inhibit the growth of Vacillus subtillis. Due to continuing interest in this group of natural products, we report in this paper on the synthesis of a number of analogues of viridicatin and viridicatol.
