In order to reduce or avoid human and installation damage bylightning, a lot of lightning protection and earthing techniques havebeen invented. The IEC publication 61024-1 `Structure against directlightning' and China state standard GB 50057 `Design specification oflightning protection in structure' are the main guidance for structureagainst direct lightning in China. Due to the amount of precisionequipment installed in a telecom center, carrying out these lightningprotection standards, which aimed to protect humans and some basicinstallations only against lightning, is not perfect enough. It couldn'tprovide sufficient protection to the telecommunication networkequipment. So the new effective measurements to protect thetelecommunication centers and equipment against lightning need to beresearched quickly. Though some specifications aimed at protectingtelecom centers against lightning have been established, a lot ofproblems still exist. This paper provides some methods to solve theproblems of direct lightning and lightning EMP protection, and earthing
