More than 50% of the deaths among bedridden elderly people are caused due to cardiovascular diseases and the risk of cardiovascular diseases doubles or even triples with every decade of ageing. With the life expectancy on rising in developing countries, a reliable health monitoring system for elderly people is in need of the hour. This paper is a synergistic combination of Arduino and Laboratory Virtual Instrument Engineering Workbench (LabVIEW) software, to develop a system which will continuously monitor the critical parameters like Electrocardiogram (ECG), Heart rate and temperature. In addition to that, the proposed system will also monitor room parameters like relative humidity, temperature, and electric power. Arduino along with Bluetooth and Biomedical sensors acts as a wireless data acquisition system. The data thus obtained would be processed and displayed in the form of graphs by PC using LabVIEW and these parameters can be remotely monitored using TeamViewer software. An SMS alert using Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) module and an Email alert using Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is sent if the parameters are not within desired limits. This paper also has a LabVIEW based response system which mimics the current response systems (ambulance) in case of an emergency, and it can also be used for assisting the patient which can be remotely controlled using TeamViewer software. In order to enhance the present work various other sensors like blood pressure sensor, the pulse oximeter can be added. In future Hybrid manipulators to assist elderly bedridden and unmanned aerial vehicles to deliver medicines can be added to the current response system.
