The internal overvoltage is one of the key technical problems for half-wavelength AC transmission (HWACT). It is a short time for arresters to have low resistance, and the influence of arresters in the HWACT line can be neglected. Therefore, arresters can be used as an option of the suppression of transient overvoltage in HWACT lines. In this paper, an optimal arrangement scheme of arresters along the UHV HWACT line is proposed. In the scheme, a simulation model of the ultra-high voltage (UHV) HWACT line is presented according to typical parameters of UHV transmission lines, and the overvoltage suppression effect by arresters and circuit breakers with closing resistances are compared and explored. The simulation results show that the suppression effect is better when arresters are installed at both ends and in the middle segment of the line, and the suppression effect of the 7-group arresters along the line is better than that of the 5-group arresters and 3-group arresters.
