This paper presents a physically-based GIS model and hydro-mechanically coupled Finite Element (FE) model to describe rainfall-induced shallow landslide under extreme rainfall events. The main features of two models are presented and comprehensive case study on the 2011 Umyeonsan (Mt.) landslide (Korea) is given to illustrate its application and usefulness. Moreover, an experimental study is performed to investigate the cause and mechanism of landslide/debris flow. A number of technical finding are of interests, including the effect of groundwater flow, the downward velocity of wetting front, the upward velocity of groundwater level, and progressive slope failure.
