A novel tunable microstrip metamaterial ferrite λPg/4-type stepped impedance resonator (SIR) is introduced for the first time. The presented resonator has been designed over ferrite substrate in left-handed configuration. The tunability theoretical concepts of its operation are discussed. Also, its performance has been validated using the numerical electromagnetic fullwave simulations. The results show that the operating resonant frequency can be tuned from 5.1 GHz to 5.65 GHz by changing the applied DC magnetic bias.
