Simultaneous multilayer curtain coating is a very attractive application method, because it not only opens up endless possibilities for designing multilayered products with optimized multiple functions and reduced raw material costs, but it also allows one to manufacture such complex multilayered products effectively (high uniformity of the coated layers) and efficiently (one coating pass, very high web speed). In some aspects, multilayer curtain coating is similar to co-extrusion. However, most of the relevant process-technological details differ between these two processes. This presentation aims at showing some of the currently implemented and potential future product applications for multilayer curtain coating, and at providing a fundamental understanding of the major process features, including the boundaries of the operating window. In addition, particular similarities and differences between co-extrusion and multilayer curtain coating will be discussed.
