摘要

Examination and reconnaissance sampling of a variety of mineral deposit types in the Pontide metallogenic zone indicates that volcanic hosted massive sulphide deposits (VHMS) deposits have the most environemtnal impact. Acid mine drainage (AMD) is widely develoepd in the coastal areas, although at the large deposit at Murgul metals are disposed of into the Coruh River, which flows across the border into Georgia. At Cayeli, tailings are disposed of into the Black Sea. Vein deposits mainly occur at altitude and are mined as small scale opeations which lead to soil removal although with little AMD. A GIS database was built and used to predict other areas of impact based on sulphide concentration, size, altitude and rainfall.
