The Carboniferous series of the SW Catalonian Coastal Ranges contain sediment-hosted massive sulphide deposits. The most important of these are Mas del Besso, Mas del Mestre, and I'Argentera. The sulphides from Mas del Besso have #delta#~(34)S values of -1.5 to 3 per thousand. In Mas del Mestre deposit #delta#~(34)S values mostly range between 3.2 and 4.9 per thousand; in L'Argentera they are between - 1.6 to -0.9 per thousand. The ore mineralization in Mas del Besso deposit has a Namurian model Pb age, except for the sulphides near a porphyritic dyke, which is Westphalian. This is interpreted as a result of remobilization. The source of sulphur in these deposits would be the leaching of the underlying rocks, together with a mixing with sulphur from the inorganic reduction of the seawater sulphate. In L'argentera, a contribution of bacteriogenic sulphur could be present.
