The seismic ruggedness of fire suppression systems is essential to safety and loss prevention in facilities housing flammable and hazardous materials, and to the successful performance of emergency response facilities, such as hospitals, following earthquakes. Fire suppression systems are not only needed to mitigate earthquake-caused fires, they must also not damage other safety systems through colapse, leakage or inadvertent actuation. For these facilities, the design of fire suppression systems should therefore be based on a thorough understanding of seismic behavior, particularly the seismic behavior of their piping joints and supports.
