Breast cancer cells were successfully cultured in the 3D hydrogel system, and morphological changes yielding 3D cellular aggregates were induced in both cell lines, thus, indicating the models' potential to effectively mimic the in vivo tumor microenvironment. At physiologically relevant levels, leptin likely acts in conjunction with other cytokines to promote proliferation and metastasis of breast cancer cells. Ongoing and future work will include investigation of the effects of leptin in combination with other pro-inflammatory cytokines, to determine the combinatory effects of these cytokines on cell metastasis.
