The TC26 technical committee of the ECMA standards organization is drafting noise measurement procedures for Large Format Printers, which typically print on roll media 24 to 36 inches wide, in a new C.24 Annex in the ECMA-74 standard, which prescribes procedures for measuring noise of information technology and telecommunications equipment. In light of the existing JBMS-74-2 standard for measuring of noise of these printers, the present paper addresses topics relevant to drafting the annex: 1) whether to include multi-function Large Format Printers along with single function printers and, if so, which of the print, copy and scan operations to measure; 2) dealing with accessories to Large Format Printers; 3) whether to measure sheet, as well as roll, media operations; 4) defining the measurement time window with consideration of roll media cutting and falling events; and 5) whether the ECMA-74 Figure C.5 print pattern appropriately scaled is suitable.
