This paper presents a low-complexity front-end for the demodulation of continuous phase modulation (CPM). We show that in the presence of strong adjacent channel interference (ACI), using more than one basis function for signal demodulation is not necessary, if not detrimental, at least for a wide range of CPM schemes. For additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), it is known that the principal component analysis (PCA) yields the optimal truncated front-end. In the presence of strong ACI and a severe low-pass filter at the receiver input, we show that an elementary frequency domain approach (FDA) suffices to design a one-dimensional front-end which outperforms the one based on the first principal component in most practical cases.
