This paper describes an investigation of stiffened and unstiffenedcaisson penetration in non-homogeneous clay through largedeformation finite element (LDFE) analyses. The reported field datafrom case histories and measured data from centrifuge model tests arealso summarized. The discrepancy of the installation mechanismsbetween stiffened and unstiffened caissons is highlighted. Conventionalshearing resistance model is calibrated against the summarized data.
