摘要

In this paper, the sustainability of residential areas is considered based on two focuses-spatial and social.Spatially, this study focuses on the subdivision of the site and its gardens and open space.Socially, this study focuses on the family structure, the amount of time that households have lived in the area, and so on.The study field is the Hama-Koshien residential area in Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. As a result, both maintenance and change/transformation are necessary for sustainable dwelling.Maintenance comprises main necessities for existence, structural space, and maintenance required for residents who have lived in the site with a change of generation.Change/transformation comprises additional elements, diversity, non-planned elements, and newcomers. The relationship between static maintenance and dynamic change/transformation is important for sustainable dwelling.
