Urban Regeneration by Temporary Use of a Vacant Shop as Co-working Space-The 'MILE' project case study in Mito city, Japan

The purpose of this paper is to clarify the effects of introducing the temporary use of a vacant shop as co-working space on urban regeneration, as well as investigate notable features of economically-sustainable management of urban space, as observed through the case study of newly introduced temporary space.First, we aim to clarify the importance of co-working on urban regeneration, amid current challenges in Japan pertaining to economically sustainable co-working spatial management schemes as derived from literature review.Second, we shall seek to extract the supposed effects of temporarily using vacant shop as a kind of co-working space in the context of economical sustainability, as proposed in this paper.Finally, we go to highlight effective management process of temporary co-working space and reveal areas of improvement through experiments in actual temporary co-working space management project located in Mito city.As a result, we conclude that temporary use of such vacant space is effective to maintain the economical sustainability of using co-working space.On the other hand, we also conclude that establishing a system of collaboration among citizens and sharing future visions of urban regeneration with them are important to attract people and promote the sustainable utilization of urban space.
