摘要

After Silla unified Three Kingdoms in 668, a new type of Buddhist temple called the twin pagoda style of Buddhist temple appeared on the Korean peninsula centering on Gyeongju. The Sacheongwangsa built in 679 was designed in a way that the middle gate, image hall, and auditorium were put along the north-south axis, and the pagodas were located symmetrically in the front left and right of the image hall, while the transepts were located on the front left and right sides of the image hall. The twin pagoda style of Buddhist temple was popular in the 7th century, but its structure showed variations in the 8th century. The horizontal length of the temple became narrow, but the vertical length became long, and some components such as the corridor and transepts disappeared. It also appeared that the temples had several additional areas as shown in the Bulguksa and Inyongsa. The pagoda changed to the stone pagodas and was located closer to the center line of north and south, taking up more space. The stone lamps also appeared in front of the sides or in front of the pagodas. These changes led to the irregular layout as shown in the Silsangsa and Borimsa, which were built in the late 9th century.
