Facility survey report: Recent trends in public gymnasiums in Japan based on profiles published in 'Sports Facilities' from 1995 to 2010

This study aims to clarify the facility contents and trends in public gymnasiums in Japan.We examined 122 facilities that were profiled in the monthly architectural magazine "Sports Facilities"[1].Based on the contents of the facilities, gymnasiums were classified as either single-or mixed-use.Based on the number of sports rooms, gymnasiums were classified as either single-or multi-chamber.Based on the building's architecture, gymnasiums were divided into multi-layer type, segmented type, large-roof type or integrated type.We investigated the typical characteristics of each type of gymnasium.
