The new tunneling technology in soft ground called URUP (Ultra Rapid Underpass) was developed in an attempt toallow construction of a roadway underpass tunnel in a busy intersection where there is very limited work spaceavailable while being required to accelerate a construction schedule to minimize adverse impacts to the localenvironment. The URUP method enables a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) to launch and hole through directly fromground level safely while maintaining the ground stability from zero to ultra thin ground coverage and eliminates theneed for the large-scaled open cut excavation typically required for launching and receiving a TBM. This paperintroduces a new shield tunneling technology named URUP and discusses the experimental construction undertakenin the development process. The paper also provides project reports on three of the public projects that applied theURUP method.
