S(P)EEDKITS –RAPID DEPLOYABLE KITS AS SEEDS FOR SELF-RECOVERY A FP7 EU-RESEARCH PROJECT TO DEVELOP A MOBILE, RAPID DEPLOYABLE SMALL-SCALE BIOGAS PLANT TO IMPROVE THE HYGIENE IN REFUGEE CAMPS.
Some time ago relief organizations like the Red Cross have created Emergency Response Units (ERU)for conflict areas. These units are developed to be ready for operation within 72 hours. To prevent epidemics likecholera and typhus, which are very common in refugee camps, because of the low standards of hygiene, they decidedto improve the system by adding a mobile biogas plant. This Upgrade should be up to reduce the pathogenic germs inhuman feces and produce renewable energy at the same time. The International Biogas and Bioenergy Centre ofCompetence (IBBK Fachgruppe Biogas GmbH) is the German Partner of the project consortium, which includestwelve European Institutions. The assignment of the IBBK will be to develop a mobile small-scale biogas plantcustomized for 200 people, which will be fed by the human feces and kitchen waste. In order to guarantee a sufficientlevel of sanitation and to prevent epidemics caused through hygienic reasons, the plant will be operated underthermophilic conditions, at least 50°C guaranteed for at least 24 hours.
