Mobile communication network positioning (MCNP) technology was applied to study the off-campus travel patterns of college students. MCNP data was collected by smartphone app from 97 volunteers on Siping Campus and Jiading Campus of Tongji University for a period of 35 days. The students' travel characteristics are described by 3 measures, including daily activity frequency, number of distinct activity points, and travel distance from the campus. For students on Jiading Campus, their average daily activity frequency and travel distance from the campus are higher/larger than those of students on Siping Campus. The students' travel often happened during lunch and supper. The activity scopes of students on Jiading Campus are much larger than those of students on Siping Campus. Most students' travel depended on bus and metro. Finally, we studied their travel predictability by entropy method. We found that major and grade have a certain impact on their travel predictability.
