Of the three electrospun polymers investigated, PET is potentially the best candidate to act as a replacement BM. The PET scaffolds are flexible, easy to handle, and exhibit good cell attachment and proliferation, even without UV/Ozone treatment. Further characterisation of the mechanical properties of the electrospun PET scaffolds needs to be carried out. Additional experiments also need to be performed to ascertain whether longer cell culture times will enable a fully functioning RPE monolayer to be achieved.
