The coal barren is one of the most important geological factors, which have a great impact on the division of working area, layout of the tunnel and safe production of the coal mine. It will undoubtedly affect the safety and profit of the mining. With Two-component common offset seismic reflected wave exploration in Da Ping coal mine as an example, this paper expatiates on the feasibility of the exploration method in detecting the coal barren zone. The distributions of the coal barren zone and phase-change zone are speculated, according to the changes or abnormities in the seismic wave's propagation time, amplitude, phase, frequency, and the changes or abnormities are caused by the changes of the thickness of coal seam and the relationships between its roof and floor. It also gives a scientific inference about the formation causes of the coal barren zone in this area, according to the existing geological data. The detecting results make us have a more clear understanding of the distribution of the coal barren zone in this area and provide reliable geological guarantees for safe production of the coal mine, verifying the practical effects of the P-wave and S-wave in detecting the coal barren zone.
