The Boeing 787 is a mostly composite structure, high aspect ratio wing, 8000 NM range, full fly-by-wire flight control system airplane. With its low speed, high lift wing capable of landing at very low speeds at the end of the flight, the high levels of thrust to get the 505,000 pounds of airplane airborne meant higher landing speeds to ensure all landing speed considerations are met with the same high levels of thrust. By careful integration of the airplanes flight control system with propulsion controls, the 787 now has lower landing speeds, which is always better, along with its optimum design for high altitude performance. The paper will cover Performance, Federal Regulations (FAR 25), system development and flight test results of this integration of flight and propulsion controls.
