This paper focuses on the recent advances in on-line FSIR (Full Spectrum Infra Red) sensor technology which vastly improves the measurement capabilities for multilayer coating weights. Advances in sensor technology, faster measurement data acquisition and processing lead to improved coating measurement accuracy, independent of substrate variations. Critical factors for coat weight measurements such as accuracy, tolerance to web flutter, web temperature sensitivity, substrate effects, composition sensitivity, polymer discrimination in co-extrusion coatings, multi-component measurement etc. are considered in the optimal selection of sensor technology for this demanding application. Case studies of FSIR (FullSpectrumlnfraRed) applications resulting in the advancement of high-speed extrusion coating process for manufacture of high-value aseptic packaging, in terms of improvements in full-width roll quality and productivity are presented to illustrate FSIR as the best choice, both from the technical as well as economic aspects.
