This paper studied on the consolidation characteristics of hydraulic fill soil in shanghai through the model test. Subsidence of hydraulic fill soil from hydraulic filling to full consolidation can be divided into three stages: sedimentary stage, particle contact stage and consolidation stage. The increasing of effective stress consists of rapid growth period and slow growth period. The settlement occurred mainly in the early period of consolidation in which the consolidation settlement was proportional io effective stress; and the drainage condition and load applied on soil had great influence on consolidation characteristics and strength of hydraulic fill soil. Based on three controlled experiments under self-weight consolidation with double drainage, single drainage consolidation with loading and self-weight consolidation with single drainage, respectively, the relationship of consolidation, deformation and settlement were indicated which provided helpful reference to settlement prediction and foundation deformation calculation in hydraulic fill soil areas.
