A carbon dioxide (CO_2) geological storage concept has been identified and a potential storage site has been investigated in the western Otway Basin in south-east Australia. Using sedimentology, sequence and seismic stratigraphic techniques, the effects of injection into a landward-dipping reservoir were evaluated. While the faults near the proposed injection site dip offshore, the bedding dips onshore and thus allows injected CO_2 to migrate and accumulate in an offshore direction. The proposed concept involves cost efficient and potentially safe onshore injection of CO_2, with the CO_2 plume migrating offshore where it is trapped and stored. Two technical challenges identified during the study are also discussed in terms of the effect of faulting and seal continuity.
