Shanxi province, located in the center of China, is the biggest coal base of China and coal mining has caused extremely harmful on inhabitants and environment. There are 108 solid waste (SW) tips in coal mining areas, the amount of SW discharged is more than 3.4 billion tons and the SW production is about 120 million tons/year from coal mining in Shanxi province. The spontaneous combustion of SW in China is of great environmental concern. Up to now, spontaneous combustion of 237 SW heaps had occurred and 134 SW heaps have been burning in China, in which 43 SW heaps are in Shanxi province. Many toxic substances (SO_2, CO, PAHs, trace elements, inhalable paniculate matter) are released to the water body and to the atmosphere during the spontaneous combustion process of SW.
