This paper describes the Risk Based Analysis (RBA) method for the corrosion characterization and the application of the method to an Amine Gas Sweetening Unit (GSU). The method allows determining the risk associated with the continuous operation of every single piece of equipment in the plant. Results showed that 23% of the equipment was working at high risk levels, 54% at Medium-High risk levels and 23% at Medium levels. Once these risks levels were identified, a corrosion monitoring program as well as corrosion control measures were recommended and implemented. The application of the method presented in this paper allowed the prioritization and establishment of maintenance strategies for the corrosion control.
