Current practice in applying bio-engineering and landscape treatment in the LPM Programme is reviewed. Standard hydroseeding to create erosion-resistant vegetated surfaces is the most popular technique used to date. Design factors relevant to selection of slope surface cover are examined, along with practical aspects of constructing and maintaining 'hard' and 'soft' surfaces. In response to growing concerns over slope appearance, the GEO has published new technical guidelines on these topics and includes landscape architects in all its LPM project teams. Areas of interest for future development include wider use of native vegetation species and potential application of alternative bio-engineering measures.
