Safety and stability are the most important considerations during the excavation, as well as in the running period, of a high artificial slope. In this paper, the application of numerical back analysis based on monitoring data for the safety excavation of a large scaled ship-lock of the world well-known Three Gorges Project (TGP) is introduced. The safety monitorign system of the ship-lock and the typical geological condition, the rheologic model and the so-called P-S method used in the back analysis are described. Key potins of the evaluation and predication to the safety and stability of the ship-lock rock mass are mentioned. The results show a good coincidence with the measured data of the ship-lock slope.
