In the design procedure of turbocharged internal combustion engine the selection of the most effective exhaust system configurations is of paramount importance since the engine performances are greatly affected by the gas flow unsteadiness. Within this optimization process, the numerical simulation plays an important role aimed to predict the unsteady compressible flow caused by the periodic opening and closing of the valves in order to assess the influence of the geometrical configuration on engine performance and to select the system that ensure a better tuning between the exhaust system and the engine.
