As there is a shortage of common road material and, by contrast, plenty of abandoned argillaceous rocks in Sichuan Basin, reasonably using argillaceous rock as road material becomes a question necessary for study in order to reduce the cost of highway construction. The pavement bases constructed with argillaceous rock occurred as extensive failure in 1980s, which raised some doubts about application of the rock. However, the investigation showed that the failure was caused by attenuation of after-strength due to too thin laying bed of argillaceous rock, insufficient integral strength and lime content on the low side.
