The carrier-free impulse radar (i.e., road detection radar) works in such a way that it radiates a broadband millimicrosecond carrier-free impulse time-domain transient electromagnetic field into the earth to obtain the back wave characteristics of various dielectric materials. On this principle, Beijing IDR International Detection Technology Co., Ltd. (IDR) under China Aerospace Corporation has developed a commercialized high-resolution road subsurface detection radar. This paper is mainly dedicated to this radar, its characteristics in hardware system, operation, data processing, etc. as well as its application contents, effects and further development at different stages of road construction.
