The fresh grooving method is a traditional surface treatment of cement concrete pavement and raises some defects in transition of time. Therefore, the exposed aggregate method with small maximum size of coarse aggregate has been studied to improve surface characteristics of concrete pavement. As a result of laboratory and field test, surface with small maximum size (13 mm and 20 mm) has high density of exposed aggregate and stable texture compared to traditional maximum size of 40 mm. Despite almost same skid resistance, roadway noise level of surface with small maximum size is lower than surface with grooving and almost same as asphalt pavement regardless of the maximum size of coarse aggregate.
