Use of FWD for Quality Assessment During Pavement Construction

The Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) is widely accepted as a non-destructive device for the evaluation of flexible pavements in Malaysia. However, its use as a means for compliance testing during pavement construction, in particular, of the pavement foundation has not been exploited. This paper presents a case study where the FWD was used during the reconstruction of the slip roads at a highway interchange. Tests were carried out at specific locations during different stages of the construction, i.e. after the granular capping, sub-base and bituminous roadbase were placed and compacted. The changes in the stiffness of the granular layers and subgrade, which are stress-dependent were monitored.
