Pavement engineers are continuously seeking more cost-effective ways to build pavements. With a range of new asphalt technologies, they now have choices which can be tailored for specific project needs. The availability of liquid asphalt binders and aggregates, the distance from hot mix asphalt (HMA) production facilities, the accessibility of construction equipment, the types of loading to which the pavement will be subjected, financial constraints and resources available for construction are all factors to be considered. The technologies include new asphalt materials and the designs and construction techniques that use them. This paper reviews several diverse projects, including a small airport servicing a remote recreational tourist facility in New Mexico, USA; a large and busy airport in Korea; an airport in a severe climate in Minnesota, USA; a taxiway at one of the busiest airports in the world (John F.Kennedy Airport in New York); a major rehabilitation project on a high traffic volume highway in Denver, Colorado; a rehabilitation project on severely distressed residential roads near Chicago, Illinois; an asphalt emulsion cold mix motor paver solution to upgrading rural roads in Georgia, USA, and the resurfacing of runways on Hobby Airport in Houston, Texas.
