The transportation demands of the 21 st century, particularly in terms of the continuing increase in the volume and weight of traffic using road and airfield pavements, have become increasingly difficult to meet with conventional 20th century construction technology. This has led to the comparatively recent development of a radically new type of compaction plant, the Impact Compactor, whose design is based on the concept of high energy impact compaction. Impact compaction technology offers a variety of new and innovative, cost-saving techniques which are being used increasingly to meet these construction challenges in a creative and cost-effective manner. This paper outlines the principles of high energy impact compaction and the characteristics of Impact Compactors. It then illustrates the use of this technology at Hong Kong's new international airport at Chek Lap Kok in which appropriate methods of compaction specification and control, based on direct measurement of the engineering properties of the soil, were eventually adopted to overcome the short-comings of conventional approaches.
