Innovations in Low Cost Road Design and Construction in Queensland, Australia

The aim of this paper is to highlight experiences in the design, construction and maintenance of low cost pavements, with particular reference to the work carried out by the Department of Main Roads, Queensland, Australia. Greater detail will be given in the presentation. A range of techniques to improve low cost pavements is described, including geotextile reinforcement and lime stabilisation. The results of a major trial utilising a range of paving techniques, together with documentation of a major project utilising low cost seal technology are also considered. The prospects for insitu stabilisation are examined, in particular the use of foamed bitumen. Research and development work on low cost pavements and the philosophy of thin pavement design are discussed briefly.
