Newly designed and constructed laboratory test chambers with attendant laboratory procedures are described and the results of a comprehensive testing protocol are discussed in terms of the mechanical, chemical, and biological mechanisms responsible for NO flux from agricultural soil into the lower levels of the troposphere. Engineering pollution controls are suggested. Oxides of nitrogen (NO_x, principally NO but including NO_2), though tyically only available as trace gases in the low ppb range in the troposphere, can lead to adverse impacts on public health and the environment.
