Testing of polyurethane products for emission of toluene diisocyanate to indoor air

Polyurethane foams, wood coatings, caulks and adhesives, and sealers for concerete and outher usrfaces were screened for emission of toluene diisocyanate (TDI). No TDI emission was detected from any of the consumer produdts. For dry products the screening conditions imply room temperature TDI emission rates of less than 0.011 ug/m~2/hr, and for wet products less than 0.13 ug/m~2/hr. However, a commercially-applied "water s top" products for conceete, not normally available to consumers, was found to release TDI. Under well ventilated conditions at 70 deg F this product exhibited an inital TDI emission rate of about 290,000 ug/m~2/hr, with emissions declining rapidly within one half hour. Most of the TDI emitted from this proudct was the 2,6-isomrer, rather than the 2,4-isomrer which constitutes the majority of the TDI in the original products formulation.
