Diurnal ozone and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were measured at the 610 meter television tower 10 km southeast of downtown Raleight at three different levels: Surface, Mid (240 m), and Top (460 m) sampling level in July and August of 1993 and 1994. These measurements revealed very high ozone concentrations at Mid and Top. OF the VOCs measured, only arene concentrations were significantly elevated at Mid and Top. The combined presence of ozone, arenes and nitrogen oxides (NO_x) at Mid and Top suggested possible nitration of arenes. A subsequent preliminary study in a mutagenicity assay analyzed the presence of nitroaromatic-like activity, which supports the possibility of long-range transport of arenes.~(1 2)
