Abstract: A primary interest of current medical technology is to create instruments that facilitate safe and precise surgical interventions. Conventional surgical instruments have thermal necrosis, aerosolized particle release, access, and depth control limitations. The development of laser systems for bone surgery offers an alternative to conventional instruments and techniques. The mid-infrared erbium laser has demonstrated its ability to ablate bone tissue with minimal damage and postoperative complications. The purpose of this study was to determine the bone cutting ability of a 2.8 $mu@m erbium laser when used in a thermally controlled environment. !4
