A variety of by-products and wastes are generated in the steel industry. Blast furnace slag and steel slag make up the largest tonnage. Blast furnace slag is widely used as an aggregate or as a cement replacement in cement concrete. The steel making process produces two types of slag: steel slag and ladle slag. They have totally different physical and chemical properties and are mixed together in most steel slag processing operations. Steel slag is used as an asphalt concrete aggregate in most countries that have steel plants, including Canada. However, the presence of free CaO and MgO may cause expansion of the slag. The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario, Canada, banned the use of steel slag in asphalt concrete on provincial highways several years ago because of the epansion problem. Thus, new processes or applications for the use of steel slag have been actively explored by the steel industry. This apper discusses properties of a high performance cement based on steel furnace slag. The cement based on steel slag showed strengths similar to conventional Portaland cement at early and later ages, but much better acid and salt corrosion resistance than conventional Portland cement.
