Fertilisers from iron and steel slags

Today the use of iron and steel slag as fertilisers plays an important role int he total use of the slags in Germany. The use of steelmaking slag has a long tradition. Due to the high contents of soluble phosphates basic slag from the "Basic Bessemer Process" has been used as fertiliser until the middle of the 90's. Changing process technology for the production of high quality steels with lowest phosphorous contents led to calcium-silicate slags. These slags are used as lime fertilisers or as liming agents in Germany to neutralise acidic soil.
