Chemical Composition of Kenaf (Hibiscus Cannabinus L.) Seed and Its Usage

Kenaf is cultivated widely in many parts of the world like, Thailand, Australia, Japan, and the United States. In order to evaluate the possible use of kenaf seeds, lipid and amino acid composition of kenaf seeds of three varieties were analyzed. No significant difference was found in the tested parameters among the three varieties. The fat content was about 20% and found to be a semi-drying oil. The fatty acid, sterol and tocopherol composition of the oil were similar to that of cottonseed oil. The protein content of kenaf seeds was about 20% and the amino acid composition of seeds resembled that of sesame seed. The oil cake of seed can be used for food and feed purposes or as a fertilizer.
