In this study, the possibility of sugar conversion of woody biomass and their degradation features of major wood components were characterized using supercritical water (SCW) treatment. The wood meal of poplar {Populus alba x glandulosa) and pitch pine (Pinus rigida) were treated for 30 and 60sec under subcritical (23 MPa, 25℃ and 350℃) and supercritical condition (23 MPa, 380℃, 400℃, and 425℃), respectively. In case of batch type the lignocellulosics were oxidized at 380℃ and 100MPa for 30sec. The degradation rate of woody biomasses was ranged between 75% and 90% during the both SCW treatment systems. The main degradation products were identified to monomeric sugars and furan derivatives from the cellulose/hemicellulose and low molecular phenolic compounds from the lignin. The total yields of monomeric sugars reached up to 6.7% for poplar and 7.3% for pitch pine at the flow type supercritical condition of 425℃, 23MPa for 60sec.
