Based upon an examination of the almost complete genome sequence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, provided by Integrated Genomics and The Institute for Genomic Research, we describe aspects of the genetic organization and control of genes involved in nitrogen metabolism and nitrogen fixation. Genes and pathways possibly involved in type IV pilus formation, flagella formation, conjugation, hydrogen utilization, heavy metal resistance and cation uptake and export are also described.
