Controlling On-Farm Inventories of Raw Milk to Protect Public Health

The society has become more and more concerned with the quality and safety of milk products after the scandal of tainted-milk powder that claimed the lives of more than 13 infants in Fuyang of East China's Anhui Province in 2004, and excess-iodine Nestle milk powder in 2005. In order to guarantee a supply of quality and safe raw milk for milk processing plants, practices on dairy farm must be implemented according to standards and rules issued by the industry and authority. Here we first analyze the various on-farm factors that affect the quality and safety of raw milk, such as feed and feeding, environment, cattle health condition, managerial factors and milking procedure, and so forth. A variety of malpractices affecting the quality and safety of raw milk were pointed out and evaluated in order to give priority to specific factors. Finally we put forwards some suggestions and practicable measures to control these on-farm factors that affect the quality and safety of raw milk to protect public health.
